Free State hydropower plant launches first units
The R100-million 7 MW hydropower plant, which is currently being built near Bethlehem in the Free State, had its first unit launched today. The first unit is housed at the Sol Plaatjie Dam.
The nearby municipality, the Dihlabeng Local Municipality, has in fact already bought the first order for power.
The second unit, which is due to be commissioned in April, will be on private land between Bethlehem and Clarens.
The carbon credits derived from this project, with an estimated 33 000t/y of carbon dioxide being curbed, would be sold to Norwegian State-owned electricity company Stalkraft AS.
